The American pit bull Terrier is one of the most popular breeds of dogs in United States. They come in several different color varieties some of the most popular colorations are brindle, blue, and black. Among these black pit bulls are the most abundant in the US.
Most of the press that pit bulls get is pretty much negative. But when you start investigating the breed a pattern begins to develop that is not at all like the animal expert trade in the media. One fact it was pretty astounding is that poodles actually demonstrated a higher level of aggression that pit bulls.
The facts are that any dog can be dangerous. And on the other side of the coin any dog has the ability to become a great companion as well. There are various factors that determine the temperament of any dog.
There is no proof that any particular breed of dog is more aggressive more dangerous than another. Different breeds of dogs were developed over time to fulfill specific duties for their masters.
Pit Bull Facts…
Pit bulls do tend to have a high prey instinct. This is no different than dogs like bloodhounds or Shetland sheep dogs have higher instincts for either hunting or herding due to years of specialized breeding to excel in that task.
Pit bulls were originally created unfortunately for fighting. But just like the other breeds that I mentioned, they are capable of being raised to be wonderful companions. Dogs much like people are products of how they’re raised.
The pit bull breed has been demonized by the media and other on informed individuals that seem to call every dog that involved in an act of aggression a pit bull. Unfortunately for this breed it has become the poster child of dangerous and aggressive dogs. This also coupled with the fact that many of these dogs are used by unscrupulous people that run dog fighting operations illegally throughout the country and the world.
Pit Bulls are a very strong and powerful dog. That coupled with extremely strong jaws and relentless determination can create an intimidating creature. But just like any other trait that an animal may have, it can be trained to use then in a positive way.

When it comes the pit Bulls training is crucial and it should start at an early age. But even if you adopt the pit bull it’s never too late to start training. Pit bulls are a very intelligent breed and are extremely loyal to their owners. These dogs strive to please their masters which makes training a pit bull a very rewarding task once you have the proper guidance.
When you incorporate a proven training program with the intelligence of this breed you will find that a pit bull can easily become one of the best breed of dogs you could ever own.
Pit bulls are very trainable that is why they’re used by many law enforcement departments for rescue work these dogs are also used as therapy dogs and working dogs for livestock. This is the true picture of the pit bull breed which I’m sure is quite different from the one you normally see portrayed on the five o’clock news.
There are many Pit Bull facts that never make it to the daily news. Most of the Pit Bulls that are family dogs are nothing like the viscous killers that are portrayed in the media.

i have a solid white pitbull. He is the cutiest dog, and he is so sweet he could never hurt anyone. He may disobey me at times but he nows when he has done something. So when he nows he has done something wrong he tries to kiss up to me so im not mad at him no more and of course im not cause i cant stay mad at him. I would say get a pitbull because they are loyal and caring animals.

I completely agree, I’m 16 and have been around pit bulls since the day i was born. They have never been aggressive toward me or anyone I’ve ever loved. Our old male (R.I.P. Conan) even kept me and my sister safe when a stranger walked in our house when we were home alone. He chased the guy out of our house and made him run back to his car. He was an amazing dog, and brother. He had been around since i was 2 months old. Sadly he passed in january of this year, he will never be forgotten. Pit bulls need more people like you to show there true colors. Your amazing, thank you

I just recently got a pitbull and she is the most loveable dog i have ever had. Most people when they first see her and scared and kinda back down but when she gets close enough to smell them she will lick them to death. (: My dad is very prejudice towards pits. He says they are breed to be mean and i think thats bs if the dog is trained right they wont be mean.

The pitbull breed is very unique, they are smart, funny, and powerful. But they need to be educated as well as the public for a mutual respect. They are as close to you as your best friend, but better! They will always be there no matter what or who you maybe be.

I am totally happy with pitbulls. They are my all time favorite breed and Im not just saying that because I have one. I do think that people give this breed a bad name and they do not give it a fair chance. I am 14 years old and I dont agree with you. I have 3 pitbulls myself and i have grown up with them my whole life. I have never been bit by a pit bull and honestly i never will. They are loving, loyal, and have passion for their owners. It’s not their fault they are born into this world hated by people like you. If you would just take the time to relize the owners are what makes the dog and learn about them like i have, they are nick named the nanny dog and were the national symbol of the Untited States while the civil war was going on. If i am this young and have the knowledge about these mis understood animals you should too. They have touched my life in many ways and when i have kids hands down our family pet will be a pit bull.

They are AMAZING….. I’m only 18 and I have a baby under 1 and my PIT BULL TERRIER is AMAZING with my baby and I’ve had 5 PIT BULL TERRIES throughout my live and that’s not counting the 6 I got now. I LOVE PIT BULL TERRIERS they are great pets because back when the American Pit Bull Terrier was originally starting to be bread they were for bull and bear baiting. you should see how cute the 5 year old girl is at my school who was attacked by her “sweet and friendly” Pit Bull…..She has to have plastic surgery on her face to look normal again…This was a family pet. Never trained to fight. He was sweet and loveable and just snapped one day for NO REASON. ANYONE who would put their child around a dog with a reputation like that is NOTHING BUT IRRESPONSIBLE. PERIOD. Why would ANYONE take that chance????

I have two full blooded pit and one who is lab/pitt mix. they are great protective dogs. and very smart. my female at one time was 24 hrs from giving birth allowed a 2 yrold to pull her ears climb all over her and just do whatever he wanted to her. my male is just a big baby we got him after my boxer had passed away. then we had my daughter my male pitt was the baby and jealouse but protective of my daughter. i do know h is still jealouse but i know how to read him and how to keep an eye on him to make sure nothing happens. i know you may say oh it can happen in a second yes this may be true but just train them the right way. i steped in a middle of a dog fight some dogs jumped my female pit she got my leg i hollared java its me she let go and jumped in her house. so just train and love your pitts the right way just like you would your child

I’ve had pit bulls and have two HUGE blue nose pitbulls. That are the NICEST dogs ever. THEY SHOULDN’T be banned you should be banned from having them. I love when people say that a dog…or ANY animal…attacks for NO REASON. Animals have basic instincts. They are not humans…they don’t do things “because they just feel like it”. They react due to hunger, thirst, pain, protection (either themselves, their owners, or their territories). And although it is awful what happened to the 5 year old and I pray she will be ok, how do you know it was for no reason? Were you with this child when it happened? Was anyone watching the child when this happened? Because most animals give warnings before things happen. The 5 year old will not know how to handle a dog so that is why you don’t leave children alone with ANY dog…not even a small dog. I know of a small dog that has bitten infants AND children and you never heard about it on the news. These dogs drew blood, and one of the infants had to have plastic surgery to the face. Of course you will not hear anyone say, DON’T GET A SMALL DOG. What is irresponsible is not spaying and neutering your animals, leaving a child alone with an animal, and not training your animal with positive reinforcement.
Now to Nicole who asked about the jumping and biting. Biting, nipping, and mouthing are all different things. If your dog is a puppy “biting” is how they investigate the world and play. They need to be trained to not put their mouth on you. If it bites yelp loudly. This will startle the pup and let it know you don’t like it. That is what their littermates do. As soon as the puppy’s mouth is off you give it lots of praise and possibly a treat to let him know he is doing a good thing. BE CONSISTENT. Do it every time. Eventually he will learn. As for the jumping, do not give the dog ANY attention until it is calm and/or it’s butt is sitting on the floor. Then calmly greet the dog and calmly walk away. Give the dog a treat when it is quiet and /or it’s butt is sitting on the floor so it will know that it is doing what you approve of. When it jumps, turn your back, fold your arms, and say nothing. The dog will eventually see that you are no fun when it jumps up. Have EVERYONE in the house and who comes to the house do this. Don’t let it jump on ANYONE ever. You have to be CONSISTENT in order for your training to work. I hope this helps.

Also get your facts right it was a pit mix not a true pit. Next is the people who breed them again sadly for profit. Improper breeding is on people not the animal. I am middle aged and have owned over 19 breeds in my life from muts to the purest of breeds. I had a show poodle standard who did about the same thing at a show costing me many hours of pain and a law suit. I had to have it put down. I had a full autopsy done. What I learned is the part of the brain to control aggression was deformed. Never did this dog act out of place before , but as it aged to 3 years we found out the hard way . Take a guess inbreeding leading cause. My pit is the best dog I have ever owned. She has been a head trauma therapy dog. A great guinea hen guard dog my best friend the most trusted loving dog and worst house protection I have had. My house was robbed with her in the house and when they were caught they said what a sweet dog she was. Think four young men break in and she is licking there hand and eat gram crackers with them. I can not find one mean bone in her body when we lived in California she even tried to nurse a gopher . She has came and got me to show me injured birds and even a sick horse . She knows what is ours and loves everything. Never a dog fight or any sign of aggression. I had to bottle feed her she was under weight and size when I got her and now is 11 years old and in perfect shape. Not one time needed a vet just normal check ups. best dam breed you can own do your home work meet the parents the owners and make sure is clean DNA. If you buy from a mill you get what you ask for end of story it’s our fault for each and every attack!!!!!!!

I had a pitbull crossed with a rottweiler. He was the sweetest and most amazing creature I had the pleasure of calling my pet. He is very smart, and like mentioned in the article protective and loyal to his owner [me]. His name was Morris and he was all caramel colored and 60 pounds of pure muscle. He was 1 year old when he died.
The circumstances in which he died were horrible. I shouldn’t have trusted anyone with him other than myself. He will never be forgetten. No matter what ANYONE has to say about pits, I will defend them righteously and give them the credi they deserve.

I have a red nose named Diesel. He is probably the best dog I have ever owned. It saddens my heart when I take him for a walk and people show fear and cross the street. He has the heart of a lion and would never hurt anyone that shows him no harm. Someone tried breaking in our house one night while my wife was home alone, he protected her by not letting the intruder through the sliding glass door. If it wasn’t for him who knows what would have happened that night when I was at work and she was home alone. So for those people who want to label pitbull’s and never have the chance to own such a wonderful dog then I suggest you keep your mouth closed and get a yorkie or a cat. Yes Kasey it is sad and terrible that your dog snapped on your child. I have 2 pits when i first thought about gettin them i was also hesitant because of the media and a friends experience but now that i have them and have taken the time to train them i love them they are loyal and very good with kids they have so much patience with kids and i also have a teacup chiauha that they r good with and to be honest i think my teacup is more aggressive than my pits they r just very playful i luv them wouldnt trade them!!!!!!!!!
Hey my name is Angel i have had pitbulls my whole entire life. I never had to worry about them around family and friends. I would worry when they got out of the yard though because some people are inconsiderate fucks and think that what they heard about these dogs are true facts. But their not my dogs would only hurt you if you went and tried to hurt them. So when i hear these attacks i think well that person did something to the animal to deserve it. I heard about the little girl who got bit and yeah thats messed up but honestly you dont know if the little girl did anything or not. You dont live with her so honestly you dont know if the facts or story their telling you is true. And yes that is sad that she has to have face surgery i understand your point. Putting these cruel facts on animals is just wrong. What is Chihuahuas bit people and did all these bad things. Would you still judge them and put a bad reputation against them?
i think that people should not be so quick to judge these animals, that would be like them judging their children. People need to understand that these dogs are not really that bad maybe if they would give pitbulls a chance they would realize there not a bad dog.

He’s had some bad past experiences but I know that if he relies on me, that I am Alpha then in no time, I can turn this misbehaving animal into a well, trained one. I live in Edmonton with my 9 yr. old daughter and boyfriend.We rescued American Staffordshire Terrier from her abuser.It is $240/yr lisence and she must be muzzeled at all times cause of the 10 yr. band here.City is taking a second look at ban Jan 26. If every one with compassion for this breed being unjustifully punished wrote letters to the city council will help.Before living here I had a Mastiff cross Pitty who was shoot while attached to his dog house.I dont want this to happen again because of the fear the media is driving into the public with false information. We can all protect our dogs with proper training blame should be on the owners not the intire breed my dog has never done anything wrong I walk her every day off leash at dog parks refuse to muzzel her. She is very well trained starts training jan 10 with belinda Wagner.No issues ever with her and other dogs, socialized her at young age.

I am blessed to have a Blue Pitbull by the name of Henry he’s 7 months and the friendliest ball of energy you could ever meet! It’s very sad that the breed has to go through this, but it makes me so happy to know there are so many people who know the truth about pitbulls.

I have a red nose pit named haze. He is the most awesome dog ever. He is very love able and he loves to be around people. He is in the process of being potty trained. I hate when I walk down the street and people get scared of Haze and move to the other side of the street or say that I should have him on a short leash. Pit bulls have such a bad rap and it’s sad because honestly if you show them love and train them well they are very good dogs and could be just like any other dog. I love my Haze and will never trade him for any other dog. Having Haze has opened my eyes and made me less afraid when I se a pit bull. Now when I see a pit or another big dog I walk up and say hi as long as its ok.
I own a Pitbull as well. She is the most loving gentle dog ever! She’s 3 and I’ve had her ever since she was 8 weeks. It is true what they say about these animals. They are very loyal to their owner (they only want to please), smart, listens great to every command, fun, loving, energetic, loves to go for rides, great with other dogs as well as cats and great with my 2 younger sisters(ones almost 8 and the other is 2), and she’s a cuddler! There is a list of wonderful qualities for this animal. I could go on and on.
I recently moved in with my fiancé a year and a half ago. This dog absoulty adores him. She knows how to play us. I’m more of the deciplinairy and she runs to him when she does something wrong and I yell at her. She loves food. I prefer not to feed her and he prefers to” let her live” So she knows that when him and I eat together she can’t have anything. So she lays down in the other room. As soon as I leave the table she’s at his feet waiting, knowing she has something good coming. But if I turn around and catch her she puts her head down and walks away. It’s kinda cute. She’s just simply amazing!

I don’t just say these wonderful things about Pittbulls because I own one. I have had other types of dogs before this one including a German Shepard and 2 other ones I can’t remember the breed because I really didn’t have a “pure bread”. They were mixed. I’ve had cats, fish, and hamsters. This dog type, not just any breed, is the most unique. If you don’t judge a book by its cover and believe in second chances adopt a Pitbull. (My advice a dog under a year. I really believe you can’t teach an old dog new tricks and if they had a bad history with different owners, they can have reoccurring almost anxiety like attacks. Thats hard to cope with. I understand people who don’t wanna risk that because I wouldn’t either.)
**I also believe people SHOULD Give these dogs a CHANCE and in return they will make you the PROUDEST owner in the WORLD!!!!!! (If you raise your animal in a good environment with loving people well you know the rest. It’s like a fairy tale, happy ending story!)
Is it easier to get a puppy pit or a grown up one? I think there cute and all expecially when there sitting there looking at you with a cute face. I dont have a pit bull but i watch the animal planet show with all those pitbulls and there so darn cute.

The town that I live in is talking about passing a pitbull ban even though there has never been any incidents. There is a more than average pitbull population here for my towns size, including my 18 month old male pit. I cannot express how devastating it would be for my family to have to get rid of our dog. There is for the most part only responsible ownership of these dogs here and I was hoping that you would have some recent facts/statistics on pitbulls when they have properly been socialized and trained?? Heard that they dropped out of the top 10 for attacks last year, which is a pretty big accomplishment since they are the most prevalent dog in America.

I had a pitbull attack my son’s friend in our own yard. The young boy did not provoke the dog, and fortunately the boy survived the attack. He does still have plenty of scars to prove it. There have been numerous attacks in our area, some have been fatal. I have never heard of a poodle killing anyone, pitbull supporters are F**CKING IDIOTS.
I have 6 pit bulls, all rescues….. I have been rescuing and rehabbing pits for more than 10 years now. I have had the distinct pleasure of taking pits from brutal situations and rehabbing ans resocializing them and placing them in good homes with other educated and loving pittie people.
